Heyday's Double Black CBG Flower is a 12% CBG medicinal cannabis cultivar, grown in Tasmania. The flower’s cultivation and processing methods, including hand harvesting, hand trimming, and freeze drying, aim to preserve the plant’s natural qualities. Heyday's Double Black CBG Flower has less than 1% THC with its dominant terpenes listed as Bisabolol and Guaiol on the tub.
There isn't much information about the genetic background of Heyday's Double Black CBG Flower. So, before diving into my review, I'd like to provide some context about CBG flowers in general.
How Is CBG Flower Created?
Cultivating CBG flower involves a more specialized approach than growing typical THC- or CBD-rich cultivars. Here’s how CBG flower is produced:
Breeding and Genetics: Breeders focus on genetics to produce CBG-rich flowers. Most cannabis cultivars naturally convert CBG into other cannabinoids as they mature. Selective breeding of cultivars that retain higher levels of CBG or genetic modification to prevent conversion allows growers to produce plants with elevated CBG content.
Cultivar Selection: Certain hemp cultivars are naturally inclined to produce more CBG. Examples include "White CBG" and "Jack Frost CBG," using such cultivars helps growers ensure a consistent, CBG-rich harvest.
Harvest Timing: Harvesting at the right time is critical to producing CBG flowers. Since CBG acts as a precursor, it is more abundant during the early flowering stage. To preserve CBG, growers harvest the plants earlier than they would for THC or CBD crops. While early harvesting maintains CBG content, it affects other aspects of the flower.
How Does Early Harvesting Affect Trichome Development?
A notable effect of producing CBG flowers is the need for early harvesting. Trichomes (the tiny, resinous glands on cannabis flowers) produce cannabinoids and terpenes. These trichomes continue to develop throughout the flowering stage. Harvesting the plant early to retain CBG means trichomes may not have fully developed, which can lead to distinct differences compared to mature flowers:
Appearance: Mature cannabis flowers often appear frosty due to fully developed trichomes. Early-harvested CBG flowers may look less resinous and sticky, with fewer visible trichomes. While this doesn’t impact CBG’s effectiveness, it does change the flower's aesthetic appeal.
Flavor and Aroma: Since terpenes develop in trichomes, early harvesting affects their production. Terpenes are what give cannabis its distinct flavours and aromas. If the plant is harvested before full terpene development, flavours and aromas may be milder and less complex.
Terpene Profile: Terpenes contribute to more than flavour and aroma; they play a role in the overall effects of cannabis. This interaction between cannabinoids and terpenes is called the "entourage effect." If CBG flower has fewer or less diverse terpenes due to early harvesting, it may not offer the same nuanced effects as other cannabis types.
Review
Heyday's Double Black CBG Flower (batch 000230) comes in a 10-gram white plastic tub and the first thing that struck me upon opening it was the fact that the tub was filled to the brim with flower buds, leaving no wasted space.
As I broke the foil seal on my tub of Heyday's Double Black CBG Flower, I was greeted by a mix of rich earthy scents and musky herbal undertones.
Heyday's Double Black CBG Flower’s buds were airy and fluffy. While there were a few decent-sized buds that were spongy to the touch, most of them were on the smaller, more delicate side.
Heyday's Double Black CBG Flower’s buds exhibited significant variation in appearance. It almost looked like two different cultivars were mixed in the same tub. Some buds were light green and completely devoid of pistils, while others showcased an olive-green hue adorned with rust-coloured pistils. There were even dark green buds with a slightly different shape which also contributed to the overall visual contrast.
Although the buds had a somewhat tacky feel, they lacked the heavy, sticky resin layer characteristic of more mature cultivars. As a result, Heyday's Double Black CBG Flower doesn't pass my Sticky Icky Test.
The more I looked at the buds, the more I couldn’t help but notice the trim job, which seemed to mirror the style of Tasmanian Botanics’ Sunflower range. Seriously is there just one person in all of Tasmania responsible for teaching "Trim 101"? If so, how do I get that job?
Starting at 165C, Heyday's Double Black CBG Flower offers a flavour profile reminiscent of umami. It’s rich, savoury, and almost a little meaty, with a mouthfeel that’s full-bodied on the palate with a slight creaminess that enhances the overall depth of flavour. On several occasions I caught myself smacking my lips after consuming this flower. Heyday's Double Black CBG Flower is smooth and produces nice vape clouds at lower temperatures but becomes a tad harsh in the back of the throat above 200C. As the effects unfold, there's an even balance of calm and focus. Each medicating session brings a gentle wave of relaxation that washes over me, effortlessly easing tensions and melting away anxiety. Unlike the often-weighty sensations of high-THC cultivars, Heyday's Double Black CBG Flower delivers a clearheaded high that fosters creativity and clarity. It's best suited for daytime activities or for those moments when I want to stay productive while feeling grounded and uplifted.
Will I refill this prescription? No. While Heyday's Double Black CBG Flower excels in its effects, its less robust terpene profile leaves something to be desired. This subtlety in flavour and aroma makes the overall experience lack the harmonious synergy often found in more complex cultivars. It feels as though the flower is missing that extra layer of depth, rendering it a bit one-dimensional by comparison. To enhance this I found myself adding Heyday's Double Black CBG Flower to other flowers. However, incorporating this CBG flower felt more like a chore, especially when compared to Heyday’s CBG Kief, which has a buttery richness that elevates everything it touches.
Moreover, my flower scripts are set up for a total number of grams for the month rather than a specific amount of “THC” flowers. This means I’ve got to be strategic about how I incorporate Heyday's Double Black CBG Flower into my rotation, rather than adding it freely to my mixes.
While Heyday’s Double Black CBG Flower and CBG Kief have very similar effects… I found Heyday’s CBG Kief to be a better fit for my medicinal needs.
