MedCan’s SC01 Strawberry Cake is a 22% THC and 2.13% CBG Indica-leaning hybrid cross between Chronic, White Widow, and Cheese. She’s been on the Australian market for approximately two years and is considered one of MedCan’s more consistent flowers. Her dominant terpenes are Terpinolene, Myrcene, Ocimene, and Bisabolol.
Chronic started as a cross of Skunk #1 and Northern Lights created by Simon a breeder at Serious Seeds in 1994. However, in the early 2000s, he began to think Chronic was a little “dated” so he crossed a hybrid of Skunk #1 and Northern Lights with a hybrid of Northern Lights and AK-47 to produce the cultivar that exists today. Chronic has won seven awards in total including 3rd place at the High Times Cannabis Cup in 1994. Typically high in Caryophyllene, Myrcene, and Terpinolene Chronic is recommended for patients trying to manage symptoms of stress, anxiety, and mild to moderate depression.
We covered White Widow’s backstory in the Tasmanian Botanics’ Opal review. Typically high in Myrcene, Caryophyllene, Pinene, and Limonene White Widow is renowned for its euphoric energetic high and is recommended for patients suffering from anxiety, stress and pain.
Hailing from the United Kingdom Cheese is believed to have started as a female Skunk #1 phenotype whose pungent aroma made her stand out from the rest in her seed group. This single plant was isolated and the Cheese cultivar was born. First appearing in the late 80s she was only available as a clone. With the distinct aroma and flavour of a sharp cheddar, Cheese’s effects are said to come on hard and fast. She produces a heavy body high which may be good for treating chronic pain or insomnia. She’s also been known to increase appetite.

As soon as I opened my 10-gram tub of MedCan’s SC01 Strawberry Cake batch MCA-AGM-SC01-B14 I could immediately smell the Terpinolene and the more I played with the buds the more pungent the aroma became.
The tub mostly contained small browny-green dense buds that had a few dark green purplish leaves scattered in. Although they were spongy their bounce-back was very slow. The buds were sticky but the stems were bendy indicating they could have cured longer and thus did not pass the Sticky Icky Test. The trichome coverage was decent but the trim job could’ve been better.
Strawberry Cake’s flavour is neither strawberry nor cakey, it’s slightly funky and off-putting, to be honest. It was one of the flowers I took with me last weekend to the United in Compassion symposium. On the first morning, I accidentally mixed up the order of my dosing caps when I dropped my carrying case. All the other flowers fit seamlessly back into rotation. However, Strawberry Cake with her musky funk was a bit of a slap to the taste buds when I wasn’t prepared for her.
MedCan’s SC01 Strawberry Cake is happy, clear-headed and relaxing on the front end and slightly munchie-inducing on the back end but at $159 it’s a tad pricey. She delivers consistently however there are better-tasting flowers with similar effects at cheaper price points I’d refill before this particular cultivar.
