Could Nano Emulsions be the Answer?

The Australian Medicinal Cannabis market has an abundance of oils to choose from. The most popular carrier is MCT (coconut) oil. Other carriers used within the industry include olive, sesame, sunflower, and hemp seed based oils.

Oils fall into three categories:

Full Spectrum - Contains all beneficial compounds naturally found in the cannabis plant.

Broad Spectrum - Contains all beneficial compounds naturally found in the cannabis plant, except for THC.

Isolate - Contains one particular cannabinoid in its purest form, and doesn't contain terpenes, flavonoids, or any other cannabis plant compounds.

Typically you’d shake your bottle, administer your oil sublingually, leave it there for about a minute, and then swallow. But if you’re like me, their effectiveness can best be described as hit or miss.

The problem with oils is that our bodies are mostly water and we all know, water and oil don’t mix. We lose a lot of the bioavailability of our medicine because cannabis extracts themselves are oils. But on top of that, their carrier is also an oil, meaning we’re not absorbing as much as possible.

Enter the nano emulsion!

What is a nano emulsion? The concept is this… When you shrink a cannabinoid molecule down ridiculously small and then surround it with purified water you dramatically increase its bioavailability by creating nanoparticles that can more easily pass through mucous membranes. Promethean BioPharma describes this method of medicine delivery as enabling, “the medicine to be better absorbed by the digestive system following swallowing, and therefore more effectively delivered to the bloodstream where it can then make its way to your tissues and have its desired effect.” Promethean BioPharma also claims this allows their products to have a more rapid predictable onset while using less.

High THC emulsions are typically prescribed as treatments for pain, lack of appetite, insomnia, glaucoma, inflammation, nausea, and muscle spasticity.

Review

I personally find oils to be wildly unpredictable, I mean if I’m totally honest here one of the main things I like about flowers is their predictability. I’m always reading up about new products and innovations in the Australian medicinal cannabis market and while Promethean BioPharma High THC Emulsion isn’t a “new” product it is one that not a lot of people know about. (I’m currently the only patient at my clinic taking this emulsion, the same as with the pharmacy where I get my medication.)

Promethean BioPharma is the only company offering a full spectrum high THC nano emulsion on the Australian medicinal market. (“Nano” drinks and gummies are super popular in both the US and Canada.)

While this product can be administered sublingually, I choose to dissolve it in 200ml of water. The main reason I do this is that it tastes horrible. It’s labelled as “strawberry flavoured” but… It just tastes like awful cough syrup.

Shortly after drinking Promethean BioPharma High THC Emulsion, I can start to feel a wave of warmth and just general giddiness begin to wash over me. As I settle into the full effects of the emulsion I’m relaxed and feeling cruisy, almost on autopilot without a care in the world.

For me, it’s roughly 2.5 hours after consumption that the effects of Promethean BioPharma High THC Emulsion peak and then about another hour and a half or so until the effects fully wear off, which is significantly longer than vaping a dosing cap.

I’ve only had the product for a few weeks now so I’m still tweaking my dosage but for someone who’s never had success with edibles, and is hit or miss with oils, it’s been a game-changer. My hope is that in a few more weeks I’ll be able to taper down my flower usage. (I’ll update this post when/if I do.)

If you can get over the initial taste and are looking for something with a little bit more predictability than oils with effects that will stay with you longer than vaping maybe give Promethean BioPharma High THC Emulsion a try! (They also have a balanced and a high CBD emulsion.)
