Sunflower by Tasmanian Botanics’ King Billy Flower Review
King Billy is the first flower I’ve tried from Tasmanian Botanics’ “Sunflower” range. According to Canna Reviews, “Sunflower by Tasmanian Botanics is an outdoor sun grown brand bringing cannabis grown in the most natural way.” To what end? I’m not sure as there’s no additional information on the Tasmanian Botanics’ website about their Sunflower range.
King Billy is an in-house bred 24% THC Indica dominant hybrid cross between Jean Guy and OG Kush.
Jean Guy comes from Canada, more specifically the Montreal Compassion Club or at least that’s how the rumour goes… A gentleman donated a tray of outdoor-grown clone plants, claiming they were White Widow. Once the plants were fully grown they were distributed by the club, some as mothers, others as clones. When asked to come up with a name for the plant, the club went with the most French-sounding name they could think of… “Jean Guy”.
Jean Guy is considered an energizing and uplifting Sativa dominant cultivar. Typically she is high in Myrcene, Pinene and Terpinolene. While Jean Guy is recommended for patients suffering from Fibromyalgia, Multiple Sclerosis, and cancer symptoms be warned some sites such as Leafly and Wikileaf advise using her in moderation as she may trigger anxiety in people predisposed to the condition.
We covered OG Kush’s family tree in Chemovar’s Premo OG Kush review. But in a nutshell, OG Kush is the single most recognizable and widely-used cultivar for medicinal cannabis and is recommended for patients suffering from depression, anxiety, pain, and insomnia.
Review
When I opened my 10-gram tub of King Billy batch Q0395 the first thing that came to mind was backyard bud. With no COA and only a faint floral citrusy aroma mixed with hints of pine coming from the hard dense buds, if I had to guess King Billy’s terpenes I’d say Terpinolene, Myrcene, Pinene, and Limonene.
.
King Billy doesn’t pass the Sticky Icky Test, if anything she is too dry, even though there was a boveda pack in the tub. There was a mix of bud sizes, the largest of which was just shy of two grams. The trichome coverage wasn’t the best.
King Billy’s trim job is incredibly poor leaving an excessive amount of sugar leaves and stems. (Out of six grams, 0.43 was stems.)
King Billy is kind of like when your mate has been busy growing all summer and is super keen to share with you the labour of their love but as you’re sitting there passing around the fatty waiting for the high to kick in, you realize you don’t have the heart to tell your mate they wasted their summer growing total shit.
Even if I let go of the fact that I paid $120 for King Billy and the very next day Tasmanian Botanics dropped the price to $95, I still don’t think she’s worth the money.
King Billy produces decent vape clouds around 175C but as I pushed towards 210C she gets harsh on the back of my throat and tastes horrible.
If I stay with just one dosing cap she is mildly relaxing but that feeling is fleeting. So I chase the effects I want King Billy to produce by having more and more dosing caps. (A dosing cap for me is 0.15 of a gram.) But here’s the rub, the more King Billy I consumed, the more scatterbrained I got. I found it hard to focus and sit still. I wouldn’t say it made me anxious I’d describe it more as a nervous irritability, which left me feeling exhausted, grumpy and sometimes with a headache.
I’ve had King Billy for three weeks and still have four grams left. I’m not going to toss it in the garbage or completely give up on the Sunflower range. I’ve had much worse. Instead, I’ll put it in the far back of the closet and use it as a “break in case of emergency” flower.

What a shame. I hate the disappointment of a dud purchase. My last one was Cannatrek Mackay, big nuggets, rock hard and totally dry with no aroma. Vapes okay but sometimes gives me a headache. Like you it’s now at the back of the cupboard. I was keen to try the Mac1 cultivar, I ended up getting a tub from Alfie which was much better. At the moment my favourite evening flower is Cannatrek Panama. My tubs have still been sticky and it’s a beautiful vape. Nice in the Dynavap too.
The way TB come out with the price reduction going down to $95 for 10g after the feedback come out about the sunflowers not being very good was expected. But they didn't make a sound when it was reduced again to $249 for 28g. Does seem a shame with these sunflowers, after TB had been getting some decent feedback for their other flowers
