Tasmanian Botanics’s Royale is a 27% THC Indica leaning cultivar with OG Kush and Girl Scout Cookies (GSC) heritage. Part of the “Sunflower” range, Royale is grown outdoors and features Myrcene, Caryophyllene, Limonene, Humulene, and Bisabolol as its dominant terpenes.
OG Kush’s legendary status comes from the fact that it’s been on the scene since the 90s when it was a favourite of such music acts as Snopp Dogg and Cypress Hill.
It was first propagated by Matt “Bubba” Berger in Florida, who got the genetics from local growers where it was exclusively shared under the name Kryptonite or Krippy. While Berger is credited as the first to cultivate a Kush seed it didn’t catapult to stardom until Berger shared it with Josh Del Rosso (AKA JoshD) in California.
In California during the late 90s, Kush was fine-tuned and renamed OG Kush. Contrary to popular belief OG stands for “Original” not Ocean Grown or Original Gangster. JoshD added it to his phenotype to differentiate his plants from the many copycats that flooded the market.
Without OG Kush we wouldn’t have Girl Scout Cookies!
OG Kush is the single most recognizable and widely-used cultivar for medicinal cannabis and is recommended for people suffering from depression, anxiety, pain, and insomnia.
GSC is an award-winning cultivar and is a cross between OG Kush and Durban Poison, with some rumours suggesting the inclusion of Granddaddy Purple in its genetics. California rapper Berner, whose real name is Gilbert Millam Jr., was the mastermind who capitalized on the popularity of GSC, giving rise to the entire Cookies brand, which has since become a prominent name in the cannabis world. With its light green and purple-hued buds, GSC is renowned for its intense, dessert-like aroma and flavour profile, characterized by bold notes of mint, sweet cherry, and lemon. GSC’s dominant terpenes are Caryophyllene, Myrcene and Limonene and she is typically recommended for patients looking for relief from symptoms associated with chronic pain, nausea, and appetite loss.
Review
Opening my 10-gram tub of Tasmanian Botanics’s Royale (batch Q0689) I’m greeted by a sweet yet earthy floral scent that had a slight hint of pine.
Royale’s buds ranged from light to dark green and had a light dusting of trichomes and an even distribution of orange pistils. They were dense with good bounce back and fluffed up nicely when ground, passing the Sticky Icky Test.
However, Royale’s trim job left a lot to be desired.
Sugar leaves and stems… Royale’s itty bitty city buds had zero bag appeal. The 10.68 grams barely filled a third of my white plastic tub.
Starting at 175C, Tasmanian Botanics’s Royale delivers a familiar cannabis taste with earthy and sweet notes, accented by hints of pine. As I raised the temperature in my Venty to 210C, Royale became slightly spicier but remained smooth throughout my medicating sessions. Royale’s effects came in waves with an initial uplift in mood, quickly followed by a soothing release of tension in my upper body and chest. With a second dosing cap (a dosing cap for me is 0.15 of a gram), Royale transitioned into a more couch-locking and sedating experience, making it ideal for an early to late evening slot in my rotation.
Will I refill this prescription? No. I can admit, Tasmanian Botanics’s Royale is probably one of the most sedating cultivars I’ve tried, but it feels dirty and unrefined, much like Cannatrek’s Topaz. It’s also one of the saddest-looking tubs of flowers I’ve ever encountered. Three flowers from the Sunflower range and it’s a shame the only one I liked, Huon is being discontinued. While I paid $75 for my 10-gram tub, you can get 28 grams for $185 and ultimately it’s Royale’s price point that saves it from a two-star review.

I just made a profile so I could say I’ve been absolutely loving all of your reviews. So incredibly helpful and so well thought out and produced. I love the leaf colour chart! I just wanted to ask you what were the most sedating strains you have tried in Australian medical cannabis product world. I have horrible insomnia and the strains I’ve tried so far, which I also mix CBD flower into, just have not really helped with getting to sleep. Even if you could list a top 3 or 5 I’d be ever so grateful.
Continue making all this amazing content, it’s smart, super helpful and just really vibes.
(Apologies for my grammar and any mistakes, I’ve just vaped some green gelato for back pain and it’s strong haha)
Your rotation chart is really helpful by the way. I’m a little similar in how I do a day. My morning staple is Golden Bay Ultra sour in rotation with Amnesia Haze. There is a new Ultra Sour by Cannatrek @ 25%.
